The name of Azazel (replacing the tradition Leviathan) encircling the Baphomet, a symbol of balance, strength and vitality.
In the retelling of the Gen. 6:1–4 story in First Book of Enoch, Azazel (or Azael) is one of the angelic leaders who lusted after human females. He taught humans to craft weapons and ornaments (8:1–2). The connection to the biblical Azazel is explicit in the narrative's continuation, where the angel Raphael is instructed to "bind Azazel, send him to the dark wilderness of Dudael, and cover him with hard, jagged rocks" (10:4–5). The Dudael implied is Bet Hadudo/Bet Harudo of Mishnah fame, which likely is the cliff where the "scapegoat" was thrown.
Azazel is the leader of the Se’irim, or goat-demons, a presence in the desert to whom many Semitic tribes offered sacrifices. Connections have been drawn to Hittite mythology as well. The Old Testament records the appointment of priests for the Se’irim by Jeroboam, and later the destruction of their places of worship by Josiah, likely due to the sexually-charged nature of their rites. Leviticus 17:7, 2 Chronicles 11:15, and Isaiah 34:14 all make mention of the Se’irim, also known as "hairy demons" in their native language. They are said to gather in the ruins of Edom with Lilith and other creatures of the night.
