Lilith originated in the Ancient Near East, where a wilderness spirit, the “dark maid” appears in the Sumerian myth “The descent of Inanna” (3000 BCE). The class of demons, vampires and wind spirits, Lilitu, Ardat Lili and Lilu also appear in Babylonia. Another reference appears in a tablet from the seventh century BCE found at Arslan Tash, Syria which contains the inscription: “O flyer in a dark chamber, go away at once, O Lili!.
For information on the historical association of Lilith with the darker aspects of Ishtar (Venus), see "Sebitti", ""Lilith and Lamastu - Legends of the Ancient Abyss" by Michael W. Ford.
