Shamash Babylonian Sun God of Justice, Guide of the Underworld Altar Cloth

Šamaš (called Utu by the Sumerians) was the Mesopotamian sun god, credited with bringing the light and heat needed for crops to flourish. Mythology held that each morning he rose from an underground chamber where he slept and traveled across the heavens in a set course.
Because sunlight touched every corner of the world during the day, Šamaš was believed to witness all human activity, which made him a natural patron of truth, justice, and legal judgment. People invoked him when making treaties, swearing oaths, or conducting business deals, trusting that his all-seeing gaze would expose any dishonesty. This role as guardian of justice also gave him a martial dimension, as a warrior-god who fought on behalf of what was right. He additionally held a central place in extispicy, the practice of divining messages from the gods by examining the entrails of sacrificed animals.
Šamaš's influence extended beyond the living world into the underworld as well. According to belief, souls of the deceased passed into the netherworld through an opening at the western edge of the horizon — and in certain versions of the myth, this was the very same doorway to Šamaš's own subterranean resting place, through which he descended each night at sundown.
