KRAMPUS, the Pre-Christian Alpine deity, who survived and continued as a companion traveling with St. Nick, haunts the nights of December in Europe (and now other lands) in myth carrying naughty children off for drowning, eating, and saving for later in hell or the underworld. Krampus is for many, a spirit of the celebration of both devilry and primal nature, a force which is ambivalent but like nature itself, has predatory instincts while all-the-while delighting in the demonic and horrific!
Krampus appears in art as a horned devilish theriomorphic goat-man who is very similar to the medieval and European Devil, he also carries a bundle of sticks, a bag for carrying those tasty children (perhaps their bad behavior makes the meat better...) and a whip to keep them in check!
His primary night of celebration is December 6th, but many keep him in their happy thoughts through Christmas - Yuletide!
For us, Krampus hands down is preferred to Santa! Krampus is such a cool Pagan spirit that he even has a strong alcoholic drink named after him - Krampuslauf!!
